About Map News
Map News shows what is happening now on maps, built from news reports and official data. It is an independent site run by the Map News editorial team, with no connection to any news organisation or government body. The people behind it do not publish their names.
How the maps are made
- The maps are built from news reports, announcements by national and local governments, and public open data.
- Every point has a source. Anything the sources cannot confirm is left out.
- Nothing is placed on a map by guesswork when its location is unknown.
- Figures are checked against the totals published by the original source.
Personal information
- Nothing that could identify victims or people who died is shown (names, ages, sex, details of their homes). Only an age bracket is given.
- Social media account names of private individuals are not shown; only a link to the post is given.
- The fatal traffic accident map shows only the year and time of day, and locations are rounded to about 100 m.
Updates
How often each map is updated differs. Each map shows its last update date at the top and explains how it is updated.
