Using the data
Each Map News map also publishes what it shows as JSON files (in the data/ folder of each map). This page sets out the terms for using that data and how to credit it.
Terms for Map News data
- The parts that Map News collected, organised, summarised and totalled may be used by anyone, including copying, adapting, redistributing and commercial use, as long as the source is credited. The terms for each map are in the list below; most maps use CC BY 4.0.
- Data for the maps built from Wikipedia (the World Heritage map and the Olympic medal map) is under CC BY-SA 4.0, to match the original. If you publish an adapted version, please use CC BY-SA 4.0 as well.
- News reports are shown as summaries with links to the articles (sometimes with short quotations, which remain under the rights of the original articles). Articles, official documents and original datasets remain under the terms of their providers.
How to credit
- Example: "Source: Map News, Bear attacks and sightings in Japan 2026 (https://map-news.com/japan-bears-2026/en/)"
- Please also credit the original sources of that map (see the list below).
- If you recalculate or rearrange the figures, say so, for example "adapted from Map News data".
- Please do not present adapted data as if Map News or the original provider made it.
