Colours show how much each municipality's population on 1 October 2025 (census) rose or fell from 2020. Redder means a larger fall, bluer a larger rise. Designated cities are split into wards.
Switch to “since 2015” for the ten-year change. The 11 units that cannot be compared with 2015 (7 whose boundaries changed between 2020 and 2025, and 4 towns in Fukushima with a 2015 population of 0) are grey.
Tap a municipality to see its 2025 and 2020 population, the change in people and the average age. The list on the right (below on phones) ranks the largest falls and rises.
All figures are as published by the Statistics Bureau of Japan (e-Stat); this site only rounds the rates for display.
Official figures on current municipal boundaries exist only for the previous census. The 2025 census publishes the 2020 population re-aggregated to today's boundaries. This map also uses the 2015 population that the 2020 census re-aggregated, giving a ten-year change for the 1,881 municipalities that can be compared. Earlier years are published on the boundaries of the time, so municipalities that merged cannot be compared directly.
In the 2020 census Futaba had a population of 0 (shown as “-” in the table). A change from zero cannot be calculated, so only the 2025 population is shown.
No. The census counts the people living in a place every five years; the basic resident register counts registered residents. This map uses the census.
