What this map shows

Japan: dots are outbreaks on farms (red) published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and confirmations in wild birds and the environment (blue). Choose a season (autumn to the following spring) to see its cases with dates. Dots sit at the centre of the municipality named in the announcement, not at the farm.

Europe: country colours show outbreaks notified by each country to the European Commission's Animal Disease Information System (ADIS). Choose poultry (farms), wild birds or captive birds, and the period (current season, 2026, 2025).

Japan is counted by season and Europe by calendar year plus the current season from 1 October, because that is how ADIS publishes its tables. The two sets of numbers are not directly comparable.

This map is not about human infection or food safety. Check each country's official announcements for details.

Questions and answers

Why does the number of culled birds differ from the total?

MAFF's season totals (about 9.32 million birds in 2024-25 and 5.76 million in 2025-26) include farms epidemiologically linked to the outbreaks. The list on this map gives the figure for each outbreak.

How often is it updated?

Not on a fixed schedule: when MAFF or the Ministry of the Environment announce new cases, and when the weekly ADIS report changes. From October to May that is usually every week.
