Every year the Japan Meteorological Agency watches a chosen tree at weather stations across Japan and records the day its maple leaves turn red and the day its ginkgo leaves turn yellow. This map shows those observations station by station. Many stations have not yet recorded a date in 2026, so the map shows which have not, alongside the 2025 date and how it compared with the normal. It is not a forecast of the best time to see the leaves.

What this map shows

Each dot is a station where the Japan Meteorological Agency records the maple leaf colouring date and the ginkgo yellowing date. Coloured dots show the 2026 date; white dots have no 2026 date yet.

Switch to "2025 date" or "2025 vs normal" to see when the leaves turned last year and whether that was earlier or later than normal.

Tap a dot to see the station's maple and ginkgo dates and how they compare with the normal.

These are records of what was observed, not a forecast of the best time to see the leaves.

Questions and answers

What is the leaf colouring date?

The first day when most of the leaves on the station's sample tree have turned red and hardly any green leaves remain. For ginkgo, it is the day most leaves have turned yellow.

When is the best time to see the leaves?

This map only shows the dates observed by the Japan Meteorological Agency. It does not forecast the best time to visit.

When is it updated?

Not on a fixed schedule: each station is updated when the Japan Meteorological Agency publishes its maple or ginkgo observation.
