Cherry blossom records in Japan: JMA observations, 1953-2026

2026

早い順

気象庁は1953年から、全国の気象台などでさくらの開花日と満開日を観測しています。この地図では、地点ごとの毎年の記録と平年値を見比べられます。2026年は宮古島の1月9日がいちばん早い開花でした。

What this map shows

Each dot is a station where the Japan Meteorological Agency observes (or used to observe) cherry blossom flowering and full bloom. Choose a year to colour the dots by how early that year's date was.

Switch to “difference from normal” to colour them by how many days earlier or later the date was than the normal (the 1991-2020 average).

Each station watches set trees, mostly Somei-yoshino. Some stations in Hokkaido observe Ezo-yamazakura, and Okinawa, Amami and nearby islands observe Hikan-zakura (Nemuro used to observe Chishima-zakura).

These are observation records, not a forecast for this year.

Questions and answers

What are the flowering and full-bloom dates?

On each station's sample tree, the flowering date is the first day with five or six or more open flowers, and the full-bloom date is the first day when about 80% or more of the buds are open.

Why does the number of dots change from year to year?

Observation stopped at some stations, for example when a staffed weather office became an unstaffed station (1990s to 2010s). Those stations appear only for the years they were observed.

How often is it updated?

Every spring, when the Agency observes flowering and full bloom, that year's dates are added.
