Each prefecture in Japan has its own minimum wage, which is revised every year and starts on a date set for that prefecture. Using figures published by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, this map shows for each prefecture the new hourly rate for FY2026, the increase from the year before and the date it takes effect, together with every year since FY2002. You can look separately at the prefectures where the new rate is already in force and those where it is scheduled to start later; all start dates are the official dates published by the Ministry.
The map colours show each prefecture's minimum wage per hour. "Today's rate" uses the new rate where it has already taken effect and the previous year's rate where the new rate is only scheduled.
Choose "In effect" or "Scheduled" to show only those prefectures. Each prefecture has its own official start date; dates that have not come yet are marked "scheduled", and a prefecture moves to "In effect" automatically on that date.
Switch to "By year" and use the slider to see any year from FY2002 to FY2026.
Tap a prefecture to see the new rate, the previous rate, the increase, the start date and the trend since FY2002.
On the official start date set for each prefecture. The date for each prefecture is in the list and in the map pop-ups; dates that have not come yet are marked "scheduled".
The average of the prefectures' minimum wages weighted by the number of workers in each, as published by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
Not on a fixed schedule: when the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare publishes revised minimum wages (new rates and start dates). A prefecture moves from "Scheduled" to "In effect" automatically on its date.
