Country colours show the statutory national minimum wage per month as compiled by Eurostat (as of 1 July 2026). “Euro” is the amount itself; “purchasing power standards (PPS)” adjusts for price differences between countries.
Japan's figure is the FY2026 regional minimum wage, national weighted average (¥1,177 an hour), multiplied by 173.3 hours a month (40 hours × 52 weeks ÷ 12) and converted at the September 2026 monthly average rate (€1 = ¥180.04, Eurostat). Japan sets an hourly, not a monthly, minimum, so treat this as a guide.
Grey countries (Denmark, Italy, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland) have no statutory national minimum wage; wage floors are set mainly by collective agreements.
The United Kingdom is not coloured because Eurostat's table only covers it up to July 2020.
For countries such as Greece, Spain and Portugal, where the minimum wage is paid 14 times a year, Eurostat gives a monthly amount spread over 12 months. This map uses those figures.
No. Eurostat calculates PPS for European countries only, not for Japan. Japan is therefore compared in euro only.
Eurostat updates its minimum wage table twice a year (January and July), and Japan's minimum wage changes every autumn. The map is updated when new figures appear.
