From May to October 2026, wildfires broke out one after another in Canada, including in British Columbia, Alberta and the Northwest Territories. This map shows fires confirmed by provincial or territorial authorities and news outlets, one by one, with place, date (the start date) and sources. Satellite hotspots (heat detections) are not confirmation that a fire has occurred, so they are not included on this map. About 70 per cent of the records are fires in the Northwest Territories. This is because the territory publishes records of individual fires that are easy to check, and the map does not compare the number of fires between regions.
This map lets you follow fires by date, place and source.
What this map shows
Each circle marks where a fire was confirmed by official records or the press, and size is a rough guide to severity (area and impact). Select a circle for the date, description and sources. The list is newest first and dates are start dates.
Satellite hotspots (heat detections) are not confirmation that a fire has occurred, so they are not shown on this map.
Severity 2 or higher is given only when two or more independent sources, such as an authority and the press, confirm it. Many Northwest Territories records rely on the territorial fire record only; they are marked single-source and carry severity 1 even when the area is large. Areas are given in hectares or other units as stated by the source, with its date and name. Locations are approximate and the map does not address causes or responsibility.
Questions and answers
Why are there so many records from the Northwest Territories?
The territory publishes records of individual fires (number, area and update date) that are easy to check. It does not mean other provinces had fewer fires.
Does the map include satellite hotspots?
No. Hotspots are not confirmation that a fire has occurred. The map includes only fires confirmed by official records or the press.
