For purchases made on or after 1 November 2026, Japan's tax-free shopping uses a refund method: you pay the tax-inclusive price in the shop, and the consumption tax is refunded after customs confirms at departure that the goods are leaving Japan. This map shows, for each major international airport and terminal, where the Tax Refund Kiosks and customs inspection areas are and when they are open. Every entry was checked on the official page of Japan Customs or of the airport.
You cannot do the procedure after checking in your bags, and checked bags cannot be pulled back. The customs check must be completed within 90 days of purchase, and if even one item from a receipt is missing, that whole receipt cannot be confirmed. Allow extra time at the airport.
Before you drop your bags, take your passport and all your tax-free goods to a Tax Refund Kiosk in the departure lobby.
Scan your passport. A green result finishes the check; a red result means showing your goods at the customs inspection area nearby.
After the check, check in as usual. The store refunds the tax by the method you chose when you bought the goods; some airports also have cash refund machines after departure procedures.
It applies to purchases made on or after 1 November 2026. Goods bought earlier follow the previous rules.
At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu Centrair, Fukuoka, New Chitose and Naha, you can use Visit Japan Web on the dedicated Wi-Fi in the departure lobby instead of a kiosk. Other airports use kiosks only.
The store refunds the consumption tax by the method registered when you bought the goods, such as a credit card or bank transfer. Some airports also have cash refund machines or counters after departure procedures, for supported stores only.
