This map shows epicentres of earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 and above in and around Taiwan over the last 365 days. Taiwan lies near the boundary of the Philippine Sea and Eurasian plates, and earthquakes are frequently recorded, for example off its eastern coast. The data are earthquake locations reviewed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), updated daily.

This map lets you follow the size, depth and location pattern of earthquakes in Taiwan using open data.

What this map shows

Each circle is an earthquake epicentre. Size shows magnitude and colour shows depth. Select a circle for the date and time (Taiwan time), magnitude, depth and source.

Magnitudes are USGS values and may differ from those announced by Taiwan's Central Weather Administration (CWA). For seismic intensity and damage, see the CWA and local disaster-management agencies.

Labels such as 'Northern Taiwan area' and 'Eastern Taiwan and offshore area' are a rough guide assigned mechanically from the epicentre's latitude and longitude, not counties, cities or other administrative areas. Offshore epicentres are included.

Only earthquakes of M4.0 and above are included. Smaller earthquakes recorded in Taiwan are not shown.

Questions and answers

Does this map show seismic intensity or damage in Taiwan?

No. It shows only the epicentre, magnitude and depth of M4.0+ events reviewed by USGS. For intensity and damage, see Taiwan's Central Weather Administration.

When is it updated?

Daily, with events that USGS has reviewed. Preliminary (automatic) events are not shown.
