UK crime map: police-recorded crime by local authority

List (newest first, 318 in total)

In {period}, police in England and Wales recorded {total_s} crimes and incidents of anti-social behaviour. They are counted for {areas} local authorities. The data are published monthly by police.uk.

This map lets you see which types of police record are most common in an area, using official figures. No individual cases or people are shown.

What this map shows

Each circle sits near the centre of a local authority (a city, borough or district). A bigger circle means more records of the selected type. Select a circle to see the counts by type for that area.

Use the buttons above to switch type. 'All types' is the sum of all 14 types. The list on the right is ordered by count.

Counts are not divided by population. Areas with more people have more records, so these numbers cannot be used to rank areas as safer or less safe.

What the numbers do not show: only incidents reported to and recorded by police are counted; unreported events are missing. A higher count can reflect how easily people report and how police record, not only how much happened. This is a single month, so no rise or fall can be read from it. Scotland is not covered, and Northern Ireland is not mapped because its records have no local authority area.

Questions and answers

Do these numbers show whether an area is dangerous?

No. Counts are not divided by population, and reporting and recording practices differ. The map is for seeing which types of record are common in one area, not for comparing areas.

Are individual cases or places shown?

No. The source has one anonymised-location record per incident, but this page shows only counts by local authority.

When is the data updated?

police.uk updates once a month, about one to two months behind. This map is replaced when a new month is published.
