UK road accident map: injury collisions by local authority

List (newest first, 350 in total)

In {period}, police in Great Britain recorded {total_s} injury collisions, of which {fatal_s} were fatal, with {casualties_s} casualties. They are counted for {areas} local authorities. The figures are the final data published by the Department for Transport.

This map shows where injury collisions were more numerous, split into fatal, serious and slight, using official figures.

What this map shows

Each circle sits near the centre of a local authority. A bigger circle means a higher count for the selected measure. Select a circle to see its counts by severity.

Use the buttons above to switch the measure (all, fatal, serious, slight collisions, casualties). A collision's severity is that of the most seriously hurt person involved. The list on the right is ordered by count.

Counts are not divided by population or traffic. Authorities with more people and roads have more collisions, so these numbers cannot rank areas by safety.

What the numbers do not show: only collisions recorded by police in which someone was hurt. Damage-only collisions and those not reported to police are not included, and cycling collisions in particular tend to be under-reported. Police forces differ in how they judge severity. Causes of collisions and details of the people and vehicles involved are not used on this page. Northern Ireland is not included.

Questions and answers

Do these numbers show which area's roads are dangerous?

No. They are not divided by population or traffic, and reporting and severity judgements differ. The map gives a sense of scale for each area, not a comparison between areas.

Are the places of individual collisions shown?

No. The source has a location for each collision, but this page shows only counts by local authority. The casualty and vehicle files are not used.

When is the data updated?

The Department for Transport publishes final figures for the previous year once a year. This map is replaced when the next final figures are out.
